Off the Beaten Path: Delivering What Matters to Remote Alaska

Covering a distance of 5,382 miles, our team successfully moved a 22-ton emergency vehicle from Wisconsin to remote Alaska.

Barrow ARFF 3BNSF Logistics Operations Manager Larry Lowreand agents with LaBay Transportation Services arranged the move of an Oshkosh Striker 5,382 miles from Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Barrow, Alaska

On August 28, 2019 the 22-ton Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) truck was loaded onto a removable gooseneck trailer and shipped to Seattle, Washington to be transferred onto a steamship travelling to Anchorage, AK, then transferred to a barge for final voyage.

Our team was notified by Barge Authority while in transit that the early formation of sea-ice was blocking passage to Barrow, causing delays and making use of the two main modes of transportation – ocean and air – impossible. A new plan was devised: the Striker would be transported by another RGN trailer to Fairbanks to be stored, winterized, and prepped for transport to Deadhorse, AK  200 miles away from Barrow, where the Dalton Highway ends

The only road between the two cities became open and usable in FebruaryThe ARFF was loaded onto two snowcats with a specialized trailer where final delivery occurred on February 29, 2020.
